we call all of these laws ada, but really ada is one aspect of the federal laws. there are five or six statutes, depending on the specifics of the case. there are a series of overlapping laws, all of which require essentially the same thing. did different measures of damages and other things. the lawyers will sue you on these various labels. they all really say the same thing. the purpose of that letter is to establish damages. the first thing to do when you get that letter is to have your place it inspected. if you have done so, let the person know that you have had the place inspected. that makes the case go away. certainly, it lessens the likelihood you were going to be sued. if you need more time, talk to the tenants or talk to the person suing you, sending you the letter. get some additional time. they do not have elyria. what you need to do is find out what your rights are, and if you need to make repairs or remediations, do it because you are going to have to do it sometime during the course of litigation if there is a problem with access to your premises,

this is not to give the law- enforcement a short shrift. i have had an impact on my husband's life, some of the unwanted. but he has had an impact on mind. i have done extensive work with law enforcement, with the lapd and the los angeles county sheriff's. i am here to tell you that crime has been driven down in los angeles because of their efforts, but not only because of their efforts. so what does the collaboration look like. i want you to keep some ideas in mind. there is no first among equals. what we learned in los angeles was that oppression alone was not the answer. it did not work. there were record highs in gang violence in 2005. i want to tell you what has happened between 2005 and 2012. number one, the grass roots -- the disorganize, fragmented, passionate grass roots must be part of this. the community members who go to county supervisors meetings, the members who pass out fliers, the youths who have been in the juvenile justice system that are now part of the coalition -- those individuals must have a seat at the table. no. 2.

it is not just about enforcing the laws that make it clear how the laws apply. it is, though, as we said, you can't get at this through enforcement alone. this is a culture that tolerates this and in too many ways promotes it. as tom mentioned we have an unprecedented partnership not just between our agencies but agencies across the federal government that the president has convened to bring our best resources and minds to bear to do something about it. there is now a web site, stopbullying.gov where a tool kit is being developed and these kinds of best practices g really about the civic will to deal with this, encouraging conversations at home, that kind of social campaign is important to do that, and to encourage young people not to stand by in silence. so much of this, if you are not the perpetrator, if you are the victim but you see it, empowering young people to do something about it when they spot it. lastly, the partners recently announced a stop bullying video challenge where we are bringing together psa's that highlight what's happening by young people

when we finished law school we both went to the east coast to work for large law firms. over the years we stayed in close touch. when chris was back from over seas we were frequent tennis partners and would get together for dinners and other events in washington. over the years our families became friends as well. it's been such a pleasure to come to know them and chris's many friends in washington and to watch his career unfold. we met on the first day of school. i sat down in our civil procedure class next to a person who turned out to be named chris highland. shortly thereafter chris stevens sat down next to me. the three of us went to lunch afterwards and became friends from that day forward. chris never tried to be someone special but he was someone special. when we were at hastings his charm and wit were on display from the start. in class he was very articulate and seemed as later in life always very poised and well spoken and at ease. i think our professors loved him. he liked being a student, even studying at the national war college a few years ago. he always s

about six months ago, the board of supervisors passed a law that said every wooden ladder must be removed. that follows the unfortunate death of somebody who fell backwards and died. you cannot use these, and i would never encourage somebody. i certainly could not climb one of these. who knows what is holding it on? rusty nails? let's talk about groups. we did not expect homeowners to get on the route to often, but sometimes you can get up on your flat roofs. what do you have to do for routine maintenance on those? >> you can always tell, if groups are starting to bubble, that is a sign, it protect the roofing membrane from the sun so if there is none, ultraviolet light will be deteriorating, and it will start to bubble. all of the route jacks are the first signs of with a member in fails, so you want to check around those. all of those areas you have to check. anywhere there is penetration, those are the areas you really want to check. >> a flat roof like this with reflective coating needs to be recut it regularly. if you fail, the protection is gone and the roof deteriorate rapidly. it

the city attorney's office felt that the trial court was wrong, as a matter of law. there is a number of cases from the california supreme court. and so we decided that it wasn't -- it was an important enough issue to seek immediate relief from the california court of appeal. so in november 2011, we filed a petition for writ of mandate with the california court of appeal, asking that the court instruct the trial court to sustain the demur, and dismiss the entire case. after a lengthy briefing and a lengthy period of time, on december 21, 2012, the california court of appeal did that. they issued a decision, which i have a copy for people who haven't received them. but it's public document and it just says we've reversed the decision of the superior court refusing to sustain the demur to the second amended complaint in its entirety, we direct the court to sustain the demur to the second amended complaint in its entirety without leave to amend. on december 28, 2012, the project sponsor filed a petition for rehearing, asking the court to reconsider this -- its decision.
